Pre-Season Going Swiftly

RoboGym had a busy weekend from October Sixth to the seventh, as the team participated in the Half Hollow Hills Robotics competition on Saturday and the Sea Cliff Minimart on Sunday. The Half Hollow Hills Robotics Competition was the event in which our team, as well as others on Long Island, competed using robots they built the season prior. For team member, junior Danny Perez, this was his second Half Hollow Hills Robotics competition. “This year, I helped get the robot ready before the competition," Danny states. When asked what the benefit of this competition for our newest members is , he states, “Now the freshmen know the environment of the competition. It’s something they had to get used; to it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.They had to drive the robot during the competition- not every freshmen drove it, but those who did drive now understand how the robot is controlled.” Still, the competition wasn't just beneficial for freshmen.“Even as someone who’s been to bigger competitions," Danny continues, "I had a lot of fun.”After the Half Hollow Hills competition, RoboGym had no time to rest, participating in the Sea Cliff Minimart the next day. Our team worked a bake sale during the event, and showed off last year's robot to the public. One team member who participated, junior Esmé Reilly, speaks about Minimart:“We have to fundraise every year at Minimart, so in order to do that, we set up a donations box and we also sell baked goods. We showed off the robot to the community to get them excited about robotics”During the event, Esme“was mainly selling baked goods at our bake sale. That brought us a lot of money, which was really exciting for our team.” Overall, RoboGym has had an exciting weekend, and many more busy days are to come. Now, older members of RoboGym are training our newcomers in all aspects of building a robot, so they will be comfortable with the process come January, when build season begins.
